  8. Stop using pesticides on your lawn.
  9. Turn the light off when you leave the room.
  10. Clean out your closets and donate clothes you don't wear anymore to charity.

I like to refer to it as the "Creeping Death"
Written by Melly
If I have been slow in calling you back, emailing you or posting on here the last few days it's because I have been laid out with the hellaflu that's been going around.
I was sicker than sick from Monday night until late Wednesday and then Kaylie and Bennett came down with it Wednesday night and are still recovering today.

All I can really say about it is...what the fuck? I remember when the stomach flu was at least tolerable but holy hell, this had me wishing god would just end my suffering. Poor Kaylie was so sick she broke blood vessels in her face and one in her eye. I don't think I have ever seen her that sick! Damn mutating viral infection bullshit! I will spare you all the graphic details of our household sickfest but let me just say that if you have ever seen the barf scene in Stand By Me, it was just like that.

Anyhow, in other news, there was an EARTHQUAKE here this morning. No lie. I was sitting at my dining room table on my laptop around 5:30am and all the sudden the floor and table started to shake. Honestly, it was intense enough that it scared the hell out of me. It lasted about 20 seconds and then just stopped. Of course, we never get earthquakes here so I didn't give it a second thought that it could really be one. I was thinking more of a tornado coming to blow my house away or an explosion at the nearby GE plant, but sure enough, I turned on the news and it was all the chatter. Apparently, it happened on the Illinois/Indiana border nearly 250 miles away and it was felt all the way here. Scary.

Well, it's been quite an exciting morning but I should probably go get some work done today to make up for my wasted week. Here's to a happy Friday and a healthy and sunny weekend to you and yours!

Stop Drinking Bottled Water!!!!
Written by Melly
Want to help the environment? Want to decrease our dependency on petroleum?

STOP DRINKING BOTTLED WATER!!!!

I admit that I too once fell prey to the bullshit marketing tactics surrounding bottled water but when I took the time to find out the facts, I was appalled by my harmful contribution to the environment.

I used to think that tap water was less pure or not as good as bottled water. That' s the perception the marketing companies want you to have! The fact is that tap water is held up to more stringent regulations that bottled water. In reality, most bottled water is actually tap water put in the bottle with a fancy wrapper and then you are charged a 1000% markup!!!!

I don't always care for the taste of tap water and always thought the purifier systems to be too expensive. When I look at the harsh reality of what bottled water is doing to our world from an environmental and economic standpoint, the $50-$200 doesn't seem so bad. Plus, there are even reusable bottles that have a built in filter for when you have to fill up away from home.

So, why is bottled water so bad for our world? Let's break it down:
  • Approximately 1.5 million barrels of oil—enough to run 100,000 cars for a whole year—are used to make plastic water bottles, while transporting these bottles burns even more oil.
  • In 2004, global bottled water consumption was a staggering 98 billion litres
  • Nearly 90 percent of water bottles are not recycled and wind up in landfills where it takes thousands of years for the plastic to decompose.
I have pledged that in 2008, I will make tremendous efforts to be a better person, a better parent and a better American and I think being environmentally responsible plays a huge role in accomplishing that. There are better alternatives than ruining our planet just so we can look cool with our bottle of Evian.

I hope you join me!!!!

Next on the list: plastic grocery bags!!!!

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me!
Written by HMG - Guest blogger

Hello everyone. first let me introduce myself. My name is Scott, a.k.a. HMG. At the top of this post it says that I am a "Guest Blogger," but since Melly didn't actually invite me, I am going to reclassify myself as a "Pirate Blogger."

Ok, enough of the niceties, let's get down to business. I don't just go around hi-jacking blogs for no reason. I actually have a purpose here. You may or may not be aware that Melly spent some time in Cleveland a few weeks ago. Now she promised me that she would post on her fantastic new blog about her trip, and all the great things that she saw and did in Cleveland. She even hinted that she has some cool pictures to share from the trip. But I haven't seen any of it yet.

That's right Melly, I am here early on a Monday morning, dressed as a pirate, calling you out. Lets hear about cleveland!

Pirate Flag

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot,
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

Now, since I'm already logged in, let's have a look at that "About Me" page. I wonder what I could write in there?

Sniper
Written by Melly
I'm a douche.

It's official.

I did something yesterday I swore I would never do and now I must confess my sins to you, my friends.

I snipe bid for a prom dress for Kaylie on ebay.

I am by no means what I would consider a "frequent" ebay shopper but I purchase items a few times a year and I have had a positive experience overall. I have always felt that there was a spirit involved with bidding so I tried very hard to make my bids a reasonable amount of time before the auction ended and I thought, for the most part, that other ebayers did too.

But then again, I also believed in The Fonz until I was 10. And that if the guy pulls out before the *magic* then I couldn't get pregnant.

But my good ebay spirit changed when last week I got sniped by a big douche during the last minute of an auction (this would be the first time I tried to get Kaylie's prom dress). I was SO angry....I ran around the house cursing and throwing things going on and on about what kind of asshole would do such a thing and how I can't believe that ebay tolerates such bullshit.

Well, they sure do. They don't care. And there was nothing I could do about it.

Now, I am normally not one to embrace the "can't beat 'em then join 'em" mentality but I started soliciting feedback from some of my friends on their ebay experiences and low and behold, found out that the majority of them exclusively snipe bid. Mostly because they lost auctions so many times to other douches who did it to them.

So, being both a girl who gets what she wants and one who is also highly influenced by the "everyone is doing it" phrase, I snipe bid.

And oh, did it feel so good.

It was such a rush that, as I sat there in the last minute of the auction, with 2 browser windows open (one to refresh to make sure no one else is bidding and the other with the trigger ready for my bid), my heart was beating fast and my hands were trembling.

Dude. What is wrong with me?

It's an ebay auction for a prom dress. Am I so lame that I get a thrill rush from snipe bidding on ebay? How embarassing!

I'm no better than the ass bag who did that to me last week!

What am I saying? I don't care.

Because I won.

And that my friends, is all that really matters.

Welcome to whoamelly.com!!!!

I've wanted to move my blog to it's own domain for quite some time but I never seemed to get around to making it happen.  I love to write and I like sharing stories and thoughts with friends and interacting and getting feedback so a blog seems like a great outlet for me.  To be honest though, I have just lost the passion and motivation to write for quite some time.  Add to that the thought of having to setup all the bells and whistles of my own website....well, just forgetaboutit.

Step in my awesome and great friend, HMG.  Well, he kicked my ass and got me moving.  He so graciously volunteered his services to setup the kick ass site you see before you.  I love his website (go to the link from the home page) and asked him if he could whip up something cool for me.  So, in the same day I bought this domain, he put this place together and now I am back on track.

So, thank you, Friend.  Not only for this kick ass site...but for sticking it out and being my friend for the last 7 years. You are always there to listen, to give honest advice, to offer support and encouragement, to make me smile and to kick my ass when I need it.  I adore and admire you more than you could ever possibly know.

Ok, so enough of the mushy stuff.

Pull up a bar stool and make yourself at home.  We have a lot of catching up to do.
